Casablanca City Center
From 1910, Casablanca overflowed outside the ramparts and the 45 hectares of the medina.
A high birth rate and rural exodus, accelerated by the French landing, the Protectorate and the construction of the port, radically transformed the small Moroccan city on the ocean's edge.
Under the supervision of the French, a new and modern city is being builtLarge boulevards and gardens are laid out, and a variety of architecture appears.
The city is moving from a medina urban planning to a building urban planning.
From the 1920s to the 1950s, downtown Casablanca became a veritable laboratory of architecture and urban planning where renowned pioneers such as Marius Boyer, Albert Laprade, Alexandre Courtois, Auguste Cadet, Edmond Brion and Hippolyte Delaporte imagined new forms that would go on to inspire architects around the world.
Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Arab-Andalusian, Neo-Moorish, Neo-Classical, Brutalism, Bauhaus, Cubism… The concentration of styles there is exceptional. and provides a true panorama of the history of architecture in the 20th century.
The tramway works and the pedestrianization of the city center have contributed to the revaluation of this district, which nevertheless remains a heritage in peril, threatened by neglect and speculation.
So mobilize with CitizOn and let's set off together to discover the emblematic monuments and streets of the city center, which make up the unique architectural identity of Casablanca.
