Casa Green: parks and planted avenues
The city of Casablanca has more than 400 hectares of green spaces with numerous parks and public gardens, some of which are over a hundred years old!
Now a century old, the Arab League Park covers 35 hectares. Its plan, like that of most gardens inherited from the colonial period, implements the recommendations of the landscaper Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier. A great connoisseur of Mediterranean environments and plants, Forestier was asked in 1913 to draw up the broad outlines of a new urban planning scheme for the major cities of Morocco.
In Casablanca, it will leave a lasting mark on the landscape. He organized the city based on a network of parks and planted avenues, and recommended a list of plants adapted to the Moroccan climate, known for their great resistance and low maintenance: eucalyptus, palm trees, ficus, bougainvillea, jacarandas, Canary Island palms, skirt palms from California and Mexico. These species originating from North and South America have been present in all the parks, private gardens and nurseries of Morocco since the Protectorate.
We find them with pleasure in all the parks of Casablanca: Arsat Zerktouni in the Old Medina, the Murdoch ISESCO park, the Hermitage park or the new parks of Anfa and Oulfa. Let's go discover them together with CitizOn !
